Air Intake for Toyota Supra MK5 B58

*Some images show the optional carbon fiber engine cover, available separately.

Power Gain: 17-20 HP, 11-20 Nm

Compatible with: Toyota Supra MK5 B58 3.0

The Eventuri intake for the MK5 Supra has been developed to provide the turbo with less restricted airflow while maintaining low intake temperatures. Heat and volume are the primary considerations when designing intakes for turbocharged engines. In the Supra, the intake system sits next to the exhaust manifold, which quickly heats up the engine bay. High temperatures are detrimental to engine performance, as the turbocharger would have to build boost using heated, less dense air. Therefore, the only way to maintain low intake temperatures is with a fully sealed intake. However, this leads to restriction, as only one standard air source feeds air into the system. During development, we noticed an additional opening in the area of the wheel arch and utilized it by adding an extra air source to our airbox. Additionally, our sealed intake features a thermal shield with a reflective gold coating to minimize radiative heat transfer from the exhaust manifold. To maximize volume, the intake system is made with as large an indentation as possible for potential stiffening reinforcements. The standard corrugated intake hose has been replaced with a smooth carbon fiber tube, which also has a larger internal volume, starting with an internal diameter of 111mm (4.4"), gradually tapering down to match the turbocharger inlet. The tube provides a smooth path from the filter to the turbocharger inlet. Lastly, we use a specially designed high-flow dry filter, which is tested to ISO standards for filtration performance and has a larger filtration area than the standard filter.

Performance Test

Our intake was independently tested by an American tuner on a Supra with a downpipe and tune. The tests were conducted consecutively within the same day, with only the intake being changed to ours. As shown, there is a performance gain across a large portion of the RPM range, with some areas showing gains of over 20 HP. This is the result of removing restrictions in the intake path while maintaining low intake temperatures by keeping the system fully sealed.

Testing on a dyno with an open cone system and open hood will yield gains, but once on the road with the hood closed, the heating of the engine bay will cause significant power loss, as the open cone will be drawing in hot air, which is a significant problem in the Supra, as the intake sits directly next to the exhaust manifold and turbocharger. As the air temperature increases, becoming less dense, the turbocharger won't produce the same acceleration, resulting in lower power. Additionally, as the car accelerates and the open cone intake draws in stationary hot air, it will still be drawing in heat generated by the engine and turbochargers as they spool up. Under engine load and turbocharger acceleration, a lot of heat is produced, which can even be seen on the red-hot sides. Therefore, we designed our system to be fully sealed.

Performance Test I

Another dyno test was conducted in the UK by Evolve Automotive with a downpipe and stage 2 tune. This dyno chart shows the difference between a fully stock Supra, then with the original airbox, downpipe, and stage 2 tune, and finally with the Eventuri system, downpipe, and stage 2 tune. All runs were conducted with the hood closed.

Eventuri Toyota Supra MK5 Kit

Eventuri Kit

The Eventuri intake system for the Supra MK5 consists of several components designed to perform specific tasks and made with the utmost care. We utilize 100% pre-preg carbon fiber without any fiberglass, allowing us to achieve a smooth internal surface for improved airflow.

Each intake system consists of:

  • Carbon fiber airbox with dual inlets
  • Specially designed high-flow dry cone filter
  • Carbon fiber intake tube with a 111mm diameter opening
  • Numerically machined temperature sensor mounting component
  • Numerically machined flow adapter
  • Thermal insulation shield with reflective gold finish
  • Laser-cut stainless steel brackets
  • OEM-spec silicone connector with clamps

Dual Inlet Airbox

Eventuri Airbox

The airbox, made from pre-preg carbon fiber, serves two functions - it seals the filter from engine bay heat and provides dual cold air inlets. Since the cone filter housing is located next to the exhaust manifold, it's crucial for the filter to be fully sealed, which is why we designed the intake to surround the filter while providing ample internal volume. To seal the intake tube, we designed a laser-cut plate with a rubber gasket that attaches to the airbox. The intake tube passes through the plate, and the rubber gasket ensures that no heated air enters the airbox. To further minimize heating, we applied an additional thermal insulation shield with a reflective gold layer on the side facing the exhaust manifold, effectively combating radiative heat.

OEM vs Eventuri Airbox

Having a fully sealed intake leads to the issue of limited cold air flow. The stock airbox draws air from a single channel that reaches into the front bumper area. During product development, we identified another space for cold air intake located between the wheel arch and the undercarriage where the cone filter housing sits. To utilize this inlet, we extended the snorkel at the back of our design, which protrudes into the wheel arch and can even be seen after installation behind the front wheel. This secondary inlet allows the turbo to draw air from a larger area, thereby reducing restriction. As the snorkel extends into the wheel arch area, we also included an internal splash guard to divert water away from the filter.

Our final consideration was for racing use, where our optional air channel with a ram air scoop is utilized. We included a removable plate on the airbox side facing the scoop so that in the event of using the optional channel, this plate can be removed to provide another direct cold air inlet to the filter.

Eventuri Intake Tube

Eventuri Intake Tube

The stock intake tube has a flexible and corrugated section to allow for engine movement. However, this also adds the potential for turbulence in the flow path, as there are numerous surfaces that can cause swirling. We replace this with our carbon fiber tube, which is smooth and also has a larger internal volume. Unlike most aftermarket intake tubes, we maximize the size of our intake tube. The stock intake tube has an internal diameter of 80.8mm or 3.2" at the end of the filter. Our tube has an internal diameter of 109mm or 4.3". This represents a huge increase in cross-sectional area by 82% compared to stock. The tube smoothly tapers down to the original turbo inlet to ensure that airflow remains as laminar as possible. The tube also features numerically machined fittings for the temperature sensor and adapter.

Individual Cone Filter

Eventuri Cone Filter

Our cone filter is made of non-woven mesh, which is dual-layered and has undergone ISO testing to ensure filtration meets OEM standards. The filter is cleanable and very stable at high temperatures, with the base material being polyurethane. The filter includes an internal cone to guide airflow to aid in convergence while reducing the possibility of stagnation points inside the filter space. The filter surface has a significantly larger volume than a standard flat filter.
