AUDI C7 S6 S7

The Eventuri intake for Audi C7 S6/S7 sets a new standard in intake design for this platform. It was developed to achieve two main objectives:
1) Unlocking pathways to the turbocharger inlets.
2) Maintaining low inlet temperatures.
The first objective was achieved by providing each turbocharger with a separate filter and Venturi stack, reducing resistance and enabling more efficient turbocharger operation. The second objective was achieved by placing the filters inside a carbon fiber housing and supplying them with additional inlet located behind the front grille. The engine bay of the C7 S6/S7 has many sources of heat from various directions, so a simple solution with open filters and shields would lead to higher inlet air temperatures (IAT). Our carbon fiber housing was designed to maximize the available volume and block all sources of heat. The performance and aesthetic results are industry-leading for C7 S6/S7 models. Eventuri System Difference

For C7 S6/S7 models, two Venturi stacks mounted on filters are used, smoothly transitioning into pipes to the turbochargers. They provide an aerodynamically efficient airflow path from the filters to the turbochargers. This is not just another cone filter with a heat shield but a unique design utilizing the Venturi effect, allowing for laminar airflow through the entire pipes, reducing resistance for the turbochargers.

The Eventuri intake system for C7 S6/S7 models consists of several components designed to fulfill specific tasks and made of the highest quality materials. Here are the details of each of these components and their main design idea:

Each intake system consists of:

  1. Carbon fiber air filter housing
  2. 2 x High-efficiency cone air filters
  3. 2 x Carbon fiber Venturi stacks with built-in pipes
  4. Carbon fiber air scoop
  5. Carbon fiber air duct from the front grille
  6. Laser-cut gold reflective heat shield
  7. Laser-cut stainless steel mounting elements
  8. CNC machined air filter housing brackets

The housing is designed to efficiently utilize the space after removing the factory Airbox. It protects the filters from many sources of heat in the engine bay. The most obvious source is the engine/turbocharger assembly, but there is also a heat exchanger under the headlight, which also emits significant heat. Additionally, when the radiator fan is on, a stream of hot air is pushed into the intake area from the side of the radiator, just below the channel. All these heat sources require a complete Airbox system as a shield - simple cones and heat shields cannot perform the same task. During development work, we tested 2 open filters with heat shields, which resulted in a significant increase in inlet air temperature, causing power loss. The Airbox prevents these heat sources from negatively affecting the cone filters and is connected to a carbon fiber channel that supplies the housing with cold air.

To connect our dual cone filters to the factory turbocharger pipes, we designed a pair of pipes with smooth curves and an innovative Venturi stack fitted to the inner diameter of the filter neck. This curved shape allows maintaining laminar airflow when passing through the filter and entering the pipes - which is crucial at higher RPMs where the turbochargers draw air at high speed. The pipe design leads to an aerodynamically efficient airflow path from the filters to the turbochargers, allowing the turbochargers to generate acceleration more efficiently and reducing lag. This is noticeable when the car responds to throttle in a sharper and more eager manner as acceleration is generated more quickly.

Flow Simulation

As part of the research and development process, we conduct flow simulations through our intake systems to ensure that our initial concepts and calculations are reasonable. Simulation also helps us further optimize the system for even smoother airflow, if possible.

Flow simulation through a single pipe shows an increase in velocity from the filter to the outlet - which is expected as the cross-section decreases. It also shows a smooth transition between the filter and the pipe, with the Venturi stack allowing for narrowing of the airflow while maintaining laminar characteristics.

We redesigned the intake duct to have a larger internal volume than the stock version. This duct supplies the Airbox with ambient air from the front grille, ensuring that the inlet temperature is as low as possible.

The air scoop is located behind the front grille and introduces ambient air into the duct - the curves of the scoop ensure that the airflow is directed as efficiently as possible during vehicle operation. This allows for a rapid decrease in temperature inside the Airbox after stopping the vehicle and overheating.

The final element of this system is a thermal shield with laser-cut gold reflective material, which protects the front part of the Airbox from direct turbocharger heat. The front of the Airbox is in direct line with the top of the engine, where the turbochargers are located. When the engine reaches operating temperature and is under load, the turbochargers generate a significant amount of heat. This heat can quickly heat up the Airbox, so the shield provides a thermal barrier between the turbochargers and the Airbox to maintain low inlet temperatures. A thermal imaging video was recorded after several runs on the dyno (with the hood closed) to show the temperature difference between the hot side of the engine and the carbon fiber housing:
